Beetles

Palo Verde Root Borers and seasonal emergence.

  • Every July, the Palo Verde Root Borers emerge. They are the size of a small bird and fly clumsily—often “attacking” (bumping into) people on their patios.
  • Fun Fact: Adult Palo Verde beetles don’t eat! They spend their entire 1-month adult life looking for a mate before they die.
  • Professional Treatment FAQs:
    1. Can you spray for Palo Verde Beetles? Since they live underground for years as grubs, surface sprays aren’t very effective. Treatment focuses on tree health and preventing egg-laying.
    2. Are they dangerous? They look scary and can nip if handled, but they aren’t venomous. They are just “big and dumb” flyers.
    3. Why are they in my pool? They are attracted to light and are terrible at navigating, so they frequently crash-land into Phoenix swimming pools.
